Composer Notes

When it comes to Bible verses quoted in film, even by characters who are far from Christian in behavior, this one is up there. Ironically, it's often a go-to quote by a character who is, in the moment, quite afraid. They're treading through dark places, with enemies closing in, and they'll proclaim this scripture loudly as a means of emboldening themselves.

Well, it works. There's a coolness factor to boldly proclaiming that you will fear no evil. And it's not due to your own strength, but rather, it's because God is with you. (That theme alone is repeated throughout the scriptures, actually, sometimes with consequences attached for those who forget to give credit where credit is due.) But it's even cooler when someone can speak this over their life, not in fear during a scary scene, but rather in the day-to-day, calmly, at peace. We live in a world where the enemy exists, around us, and it's not always heightened by an intense soundtrack or visible attackers. And yet, the psalmist David is showing us that we are not to fear, regardless of our situation. The Lord is protecting us.

This entire psalm is iconic, actually, and it was difficult to pick a single verse that represented it. The idea with choosing this one is that the music will ultimately represent a combination of peace and confidence, but backed up with power and strength at our disposal, through the might of God. The shepherd analogy is another one repeated in scripture, and what's fun to remember here is that King David was also originally a shepherd. Per his account to King Saul back when he was preparing to fight Goliath, he was a darn good shepherd too, having defended his sheep from numerous attackers including a lion and a bear. Turning that around to where we ourselves are the sheep, it instills a sense of awe to know both that we are safe, and that we are defended... because those battles will come.

From the Album Foundation

The above verse is a selection from the first release of The Words and Verses Project, which is currently in development. It is entitled “Words and Verses: Foundation.” Not only is it the first collection of works in the project, but the goal is that over the course of twelve compositions, multiple core foundational verses will be explored, setting the stage for future albums and themes.
